Since it was a farkity hot day, we decided to go spend the worst of it somewhere with air conditioning. Specifically, we went and watched Cloverfield.
We liked it. The people in front of us weren’t impressed, so must have been 3 of the 7 people in the world never to have heard of the Blair Witch Project, OR to have read anything about this movie before shelling out $15 for it. So frankly, they got what they deserved.
If you’ve seen the BWP, and you’ve read any of the reviews or followed any of the viral hype surrounding Cloverfield – you get what you expect to get. It’s handycamtastic and doesn’t explain everything (while still managing to get right into the middle of things) – just as you’d expect. If you want overarching narration, a deep plot and a nicely wrapped up story, you haven’t paid any attention.
Basically, everything’s shaky, people die, NY gets hammered again, things asplode, and there’s a big bad guy that’s kinda pissed off. It also features the world’s most indestructible vid camera with the king of all uncrackable lenses (certified uneatable by sea monsters).
So like, if you’re not keen on that sort of stuff, why would you go see it?
It was hot. Damned hot. The only consolation was that the day after was even hotter, this entire week has been even hotter than that, and today is building up to a scorcher. So it was probably a fortuitous choice of days.
A week later I am still completely knackered, and that is why you get a list.
- It was hot. Did I mention that?
- Punch is good. Lindauer Cuvee Riche is better, but what can you do
- Old people can drink scary amounts of whiskey
- Sam reeks like a distillery the next morning if he tries to keep up with them
- The happy couple were very happy. Ick
- Apparently Carl finds it amusing to almost kill his friends
- Mud cake is an excellent choice for wedding cake
It was good to see everyone again, even if they’re all varying levels of insane. Still working on the photos at present (possibly slacked off a touch over the week), so we shall see how it goes!

Eww…
OK, 703 photos later, I’m back. The first of the photos are up on flickr (mail me if you want the link). Please note these are only small teeny tiny not altogether fixed versions so you can see the best of the shots and think about whether or not you want to see bigger versions! I’m not uploading 703 by the way. We ended up around 100 as a nice representative sample to start on.
The actual full-sized official photos will take a while for me to process as they require some more exacting retouching (boring technical crap not even I want to hear about). We’re looking at a week or so til those are ready for prints.
In the meantime, enjoy the pics.
If you’re looking for my usual entertaining commentary on what went down… that will come after I have a good sleep. >.>
Day 1
Dear Diary
Yesterday I accused Matt of having a crisis of the faith. He doesn’t think baby Jebus wants to see him naked, but surely if baby Jebus loves us all the way we are, he’d be perfectly fine with seeing Matt naked? My logic, it is flawless.
In any case, today I had a crisis of the pants. Specifically, I couldn’t find anything clean that fit me except the ones I wore yesterday. So I had to do the boy thing and make sure I hadn’t a) sat in anything or b) spilled anything too heinous down the front, and then wore them again.
It might be time to explore stretchier options.
Day, iunno, 3
It is hard to type with wet nail polish on.
Burger King apparently does a cheeseburger & coffee combo for breakfast. Thank you baby Jebus, thank you. Now if you could just talk to them about making their donuts not suck, I’d be most grateful. Yours etc, Karen.
Carl’s wedding is tomorrow and I have come out with some itchy as hell shaving/heat rash thing on my legs so will be wearing boots. Oh well. If you’re lucky I may share photos. Not of my legs, obviously.
What, in the name of all that is holy?!
Welcome to the latest edition of ‘Karen gets bored so randomly changes something’.
Smashing Mag featured this design recently, and ilikitalot. Amusingly enough, it features the exact same curlywurly bits my current desktop wallpaper does! Excitement!
I couldn’t be bothered doing a new non-festive header, and I liked this one enough I thought I’d give it a run. It will need tweaking to be where I want it, but I think it’s pretty!
